ITS Technology Knowledge: How to Maximize the Service Life of Rolling Bearings

Theoretically, the service life of the rolling bearing is 20000 ~ 80000h. However, due to its own quality and external conditions, the bearing capacity, rotation accuracy and wear resistance of the rolling bearing will change. When the performance index of the bearing is lower than the service requirements and cannot work normally, the bearing will fail or even fail. Premature bearing failure will lead to costly equipment downtime, and sometimes even more serious consequences.

 

The selection of rolling bearings, including type, size, accuracy, clearance, fit, support form selection and life calculation, can generally be carried out according to the following steps:

 

(1) Determine the structural form of bearing components according to the working conditions.

 

(2) The type and accuracy of the bearing are determined according to the support type and the working characteristics of the bearing.

 

(3) Through the structural design, strength and service life calculation of bearing components, the bearing model is specifically determined.

 

(4) Check the load capacity and limit speed of the bearing.

 

After determining the suitable bearing type, the wide application of advanced processing technology, especially heat treatment, ion implantation, surface coating and other technologies, is also a means to improve the service life of bearings. At present, there are more and more so-called personalized design bearings, that is, to investigate the working conditions of bearings before supplying bearings, carry out targeted design for working conditions, and put forward targeted requirements for heat treatment quality, so as to maximize the service life of bearings.

 

During storage, all bearings shall be stored in the original packaging before installation, and shall be kept in a clean, moisture-free and relatively constant temperature environment. Rolling bearings should be kept away from dust, water and corrosive chemicals. Shaking and vibration may permanently damage the mechanical properties of the bearing, so vibration must be avoided during handling and storage.

 

Basically, all bearings must be kept horizontally, because some heavy bearings may be deformed due to their own weight after being placed vertically for a long time.

 

Pre greased (or sealed) bearings require special care because the density of the grease will change after long-term storage. In this way, when the bearing is used for the first time, there will be a certain degree of rotation noise. The bearing can be properly cleaned with gasoline or kerosene before use.

 

In production, the use of mechanical equipment on site is diverse, so the replacement and maintenance of bearings should be based on the site conditions, with the help of reasonable tools, and select appropriate disassembly and assembly methods. Industry experts estimate that 16% of premature bearing failures are caused by incorrect installation. (1) The serious surface spalling and wear caused by overload indicates the failure of rolling bearing due to early fatigue caused by overload (in addition, a certain degree of fatigue will be caused by too tight fitting). Overload will also cause serious wear of the bearing steel ball raceway, large-area spalling and sometimes overheating. The remedy is to reduce the bearing load or increase the bearing capacity.

 

(2) The color change of the raceway, steel ball or retainer of the overheated roller indicates that the bearing is overheated. The increase of temperature will reduce the effect of lubricant and make the oil film difficult to form or disappear completely. If the temperature is too high, the material of raceway and steel ball will be annealed and the hardness will decrease. This is mainly caused by unfavorable heat dissipation or insufficient cooling under heavy load and high speed. The solution is to fully dissipate heat and add cooling.

 

(3) Low load vibration erosion has elliptical wear marks on the axial position of each steel ball, which indicates that the failure is caused by excessive external vibration or low load vibration erosion when the bearing does not work and does not produce lubricating oil film. The remedy is to isolate the bearing or add anti-wear additives to the bearing grease.
